A QemSCAN inspired way to study mineralogy of various samples.

FEI introduces a brand new approach to SEM-based automated mineralogical measurement, analysis, interpretation, data integration and reporting called MAPS Mineralogy™. This new acquisition platform enables collection, overlay and re-registration of multiple images from different modalities (SEM, SEM-EDS, optical, CL, EBSD). Built on FEI’s MAPS acquisition and correlative automation software and leveraging the industry standard QEMSCAN® measurement algorithms, MAPS Mineralogy introduces patented new technology to improve accuracy with fine-grained materials and other boundary conditions in addition to resolving solid solution series more accurately.

Key features:
  • New Scanning Methodology. Our patented rapid, low count EDS analysis and point by point mapping continues to drive the data acquisition; however, several new innovations are implemented in MAPS Mineralogy which differentiates the new approach from the current QEMSCAN® methodology. Within a tiled area, the resolution of the EDS & BSE mapping can be set differently – for example, the BSE can be acquired at a higher resolution compared to the EDS. This decoupling provided by MAPS Mineralogy improves mineral & texture mapping, especially with mixed pixels at the micron and sub-micron scales, by integrating the high resolution BSE with the mineral maps.
  • Unique Mineral Identification. Pixels within an image can now be defined, represented and quantified by more than one mineral or phase – these mixed spectra pixels referred to as mixels™. This capability allows flexibility and improved automation in resolving and imaging complex rock textures, such as fine mineral intergrowths, or grain and pore boundaries, all of which are of scientific (diagenesis) and commercial (reservoir performance) interest and importance.
  • Species Level Mineral Characterization. Minerals that display compositional variation (for example, feldspars, spinels, garnets), can now be reported at the species level (not just group level) using improved mineral classification protocols.
  • Exporting of Data made easy. The new mapping data can be directly imported into PerGeos, FEI’s latest multi-dimensional visualization software for further integration, interpretation and visualization. Additionally, all of MAPS Mineralogy data is accessible in open format, SQLite database format, allowing direct integration into 3rd party analytics packages.
